A New Chapter for ISPRS

The successful conclusion of the XXV ISPRS Congress in Toronto marked an important achievement for our Society and the beginning of a new chapter. The Congress brought together researchers, professionals, students, industry representatives, and decision-makers from around the world to share scientific advances, exchange knowledge, and strengthen international collaboration across the photogrammetry, remote sensing, and spatial information sciences.

During the General Assembly, the new ISPRS Council and Technical Commission Presidents were elected or appointed for the 2026–2030 term. On behalf of the Council, I extend our sincere appreciation to the outgoing Council, Technical Commission officers, Working Groups, Congress organizers, volunteers, authors, reviewers, sponsors, exhibitors, and participants whose dedication contributed to the success of the Toronto Congress and the advancement of ISPRS.

The new Technical Commission Presidents are now working with their Commission Boards to establish the Working Groups for the 2026–2030 period. This includes defining their mandates, terms of reference, scientific priorities, and expected contributions. These groups form the scientific foundation of ISPRS and provide an essential international platform for collaboration, innovation, knowledge exchange, and capacity building.

The Toronto General Assembly also approved an important change to the ISPRS events structure. Beginning in 2029, an ISPRS Congress will be held annually, replacing the previous cycle of a quadrennial Congress, midterm symposia, and Geospatial Week. Sydney, Australia, will host the XXVI ISPRS Congress in 2029, followed by the XXVII Congress in Incheon, Republic of Korea, in 2030. This new structure will create more frequent opportunities for our international community to exchange knowledge, establish partnerships, and respond to emerging scientific and technological developments.

The new Council looks forward to working closely with all members and bodies of our Society. Together, we can build upon the achievements of the previous term and ensure that ISPRS remains inclusive, responsive, scientifically influential, and prepared to lead our fields into the future.

Ahmed Shaker
Secretary General, ISPRS

President’s Message

Dear Members, colleagues, and friends,

I am honoured that the ISPRS General Assembly has elected me as the new ISPRS President for the next four years, until the end of the ISPRS Congress 2030 in Incheon, Republic of Korea, succeeding Prof. Lena Halounová, who becomes Past President.

I will do my very best to fulfil this important responsibility, with the support of the ISPRS Council, the Presidents and teams of our Scientific and Technical Commissions, and our four Advisory Committees.

I would first like to thank the outgoing ISPRS teams. Of course, my warmest thanks go to the Toronto Congress organisers for delivering such a successful scientific event and exhibition; to the Technical Commissions and their Working Group officers for advancing the frontiers of science and ensuring the high quality of the ISPRS Archives and ISPRS Annals through their rigorous peer-review processes; and to our Advisory Committees for their valuable support to Council to ensure continuous transitions. I would also like to thank ISPRS STudent and Early Professionals (STEP), previously known as ISPRS Student Consortium, for its contribution to engaging the next generation of our community, and, last but not least, the outgoing members of Council for their commitment and service to ISPRS.

I would also like to thank our sponsors and exhibitors for their financial engagement, which helps us keep our events accessible and globally inclusive, while providing a platform to showcase the latest technological developments. Their participation also brings experts and innovators into our panels and forums, where we can explore how to address global challenges together, as a united community.

As you know, the mission of ISPRS, founded in 1910, is to advance the frontiers of science and contribute to addressing global challenges; to structure and assess research and technological development activities; to organise the sharing and dissemination of knowledge; and to help structure the scientific and technological ecosystem.

To achieve this, ISPRS organises its scientific activities around five Commissions, each jointly led by two nations and composed of a set of Working Groups. These Working Groups focus on specific topics, helping to structure the research community, assess scientific advances through benchmarks, and disseminate knowledge through ISPRS high-impact events and leading international journals. I strongly encourage scientists from all over the world to join our Working Groups and contribute to our dynamic community.

ISPRS will face several important challenges over the next four years.

Firstly, we will have to successfully manage the transition from a four-yearly Congress to an annual Congress starting in 2029, in order to keep pace with the rapid technological developments in our field. At the same time, we must continue to improve the continuity, scientific excellence and overall participant experience of our events.

Secondly, we will have to defend open and borderless science, so as to share knowledge more effectively, accelerate innovation, and help reduce scientific and technological fragmentation in a world that is becoming increasingly divided along continental lines. Science has always transcended borders, and scientific collaboration can help rebuild bridges between communities and nations. We will have to look carefully when choosing hosts and venues for our future Congresses.

Thirdly, we will seek to strengthen links and collaboration between academia, public institutions and industry, and foster the development of technological geocommons. Open and shared data, models, algorithms and digital infrastructures can help us address major societal challenges, such as measuring the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss, while also enabling innovation and the transfer of scientific advances into operational technologies. We will pursue these objectives in close cooperation with the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) and other organisations within the broader geospatial community.

More broadly, our ambition will be to build a stronger, more connected and more inclusive community, bringing together scientific excellence, technological innovation and societal impact.

To conclude, I would like to warmly welcome the incoming teams, some of which are still being formed. I am confident that they will work with energy and commitment to help us address and overcome the challenges ahead.

I look forward to working with all of you in the years to come.

Nicolas Paparoditis

Obituary for Professor Christopher M. Gold

Professor Christopher M. Gold passed away on 12 August 2026. ISPRS extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, former students and colleagues.

Professor Christopher M. Gold was a distinguished scientist in geographic information science, computational geometry and spatial information modelling, with a career spanning several decades of significant contributions to the development of spatial data structures and geographic information systems. He was particularly well known for his pioneering work on Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulations, and for promoting their use as fundamental tools for spatial analysis, topology, dynamic mapping, terrain modelling and three-dimensional GIS.

Gold held academic and research positions in Canada, including at Université Laval in Québec, where he played an important role in advancing research in geomatics and spatial information science. He later joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, contributing to research and education in land surveying and geo-informatics. From 2004 to 2007, he held an EU Marie Curie Chair in GIS at the University of Glamorgan in the United Kingdom, and he later became Emeritus Professor at what is now the University of South Wales. From 2011 to 2016, he served as a Professor (part-time) at Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu, China.

Professor Gold had contributed extensively to ISPRS scientific activities in spatial information science. He played an important role in promoting and organizing the series of ISPRS International Workshop on Dynamic and Multidimensional GIS (DMGIS) workshops. He served as Chair of the ISPRS Inter-Commission Working Group II/IV on Dynamic and Multi-dimensional Systems and Applications (2004-2008). In recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements, Professor Gold received the Wang Zhizhuo Award at the XXI ISPRS Congress in Beijing in 2008, becoming the first recipient of this award. The award recognized his important and innovative contributions to spatial information science, particularly in the areas of spatial data structures, Voronoi diagrams, dynamic mapping and 3D modelling.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Chris Gold will be remembered as an original and enthusiastic scientist, a dedicated teacher and mentor, and a strong advocate of international scientific exchange. His ideas and research have left a lasting legacy in geographic information science, and his contributions to ISPRS and the wider geospatial community will continue to be remembered with great respect.

Professor Christopher M. Gold passed away on 12 August 2026. ISPRS extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, former students and colleagues.
